I was in Paris on May 5 this year and went to Napoleon's tomb to see if there would be any events commemorating his death. It was closed that day! It was the first Monday of the month; Les Invalides, the Musee d'Armee and Napoleon's tomb are all closed on the first Monday of each month, even when it falls on the day of Napoleon's death. I was quite surprised. I expected more pomp.

I was startled to see Napoleon for Dummies (in French) on sale at the bookstore of the Musee Carnavalet during my trip. Way to go David!

And finally, I was out for a walk one evening during my trip and was also startled to come upon a statue of Marshal Michel Ney at the intersection of the Boulevard St. Michel and the Boulevard Montparnasse. All four sides of the base of the statue contained a list of all the battles/engagements he was involved in. Paris is a city full of surprises, which is one reason I love to visit.

Thanks El Jefe. I wrote it that way because when he died he was on British soil and that was how he was referred to.

You have a great site...but I was rather surprised to see this post labeled . . ."Napoleone Buonaparte" rather than, say, "Napoléon I" or even just "Napoléon." Sir Hudson Lowe's ghost is no doubt smirking someplace (possibly with that Pozzo di Borgo nearby).

Oh, Rob, so impatient! We try to give you time to savor each episode! To rush through all of this would be to do it an injustice. Worse, it would force me to start working on getting up to snuff on Caesar or the French Revolution. If I stall long enough, I'll be retired when we get to those topics and I'll have more time! But we are going to try to pick up the pace a little bit, maybe every two weeks or so.

Cheers,

David

Either that or I'm just working too hard! I actually had a great time hosting Pam and Fraser on G'Day World. I love talking about physics almost as much as talking about Napoleon!
